Bible Study on Isaiah—Adult Formation
Advent is coming. Starting on Tuesday November 5 at 6:30 pm we will have a 4 week bible study on the book of Isaiah, focusing on the 4 passages we will read on the Sundays of Advent.
A Book of Remembrance
In the Church’s liturgical calendar November 1st is All Saints Day (although we usually celebrate in on the following Sunday.) On this day, we remember all the saints who have been raised up by the Church as models of Christian life. November 2nd is All Souls Day, a time to remember our own beloved dead. Many Episcopal Churches use a Book of Remembrance in November. The Book contains a list of the names of parishioners’ deceased family and friends. The Book sits on the altar for the entire month, and in a mysterious fashion, those whom we have loved and lost are still part of our Sunday worship.
Trinity’s Book of Remembrance will be on the table in the new Meeting Room from October 27 to November 2. Feel free to write the names of any of your deceased loved ones in it. If you are not able to write names in it yourself, please e-mail or call Amy with your names and she will make sure they are included.

The Episcopal Disability Network, www.episcability.org , is the Church’s education and advocacy group for “ministry by and with persons with disabilities.” Check out their website for a wide range of resources, including bible studies, General Convention’s resolutions on disability issues, simple ways to increase a building’s accessibility and more.

Liturgical Notes – On Standing
Like kneeling, standing conveys two different ideas in the language of liturgical posture. The first idea is that standing honors something or someone. When we want to honor a person or performance, we give them a standing ovation. Likewise, we stand when we hear the Gospel to show the Gospel special honor.
The second reason for standing is a bit old-fashioned. In the early centuries of the Common Era, when our liturgy was taking shape, a person would kneel before their ruler or leader, and children would kneel to address their parents. Christians acknowledge God as a king and as our heavenly parent. But Jesus is both God’s Son and God’s equal and thus has the privilege to stand before God. We have been redeemed by Jesus and made into sisters and brothers with him. Thus, we too, have the privilege of standing before God as well. That is why the Book of Common Prayer gives the option to either stand or kneel at the Eucharistic Prayer.
The choice is up to the individual believer—kneel in awe or stand as a person redeemed by Jesus.
