Last Chance for input about our new Bishop!

The Diocese of Missouri will elect our next Bishop at the Diocesan Convention on Saturday Nov. 23. Amy, Talie Alexander and Julie Seidler are Trinity’s voting delegates. Please let them know any thoughts you have about who our new Bishop should be. You can learn about the candidates by reading their resumes, which are posted in the church hall/undercroft or by watching videos from each of the walkabout sessions held 2 weeks ago at www.diocesemo.org and click on the Bishop Search graphic.

Trinity Communications Update

Last January at our Bishop’s Committee Retreat, we agreed that we needed to take a look at the communications processes at Trinity. The first step was to change up our “Information & Announcements” Insert, using a new format to provide more information about Trinity events as well as the life of the wider church. The next phase addresses our digital communications. During December, our web site will undergo a makeover that we hope will make it more dynamic and user-friendly. We are considering whether to include a “members only” password protected section which would house private information such as the prayer lists, the directory and server schedules. The debut of the new website is scheduled for January.

Kevin Minch has done heroic service, maintaining the WHAT from locations as diverse as Kirksville, Detroit and China. With a new web site in the future, and with Kevin’s agreement, the WHAT will come to an end with the last week of November. In the interim, until the new website is ready, everyone on the WHAT’s mailing list will receive a pdf copy of the bulletin insert so that they will not miss out on anything that is happening around Trinity.

Plate Offering Today—Community Christmas Dinner

Our next outreach plate offering will take place on today and will benefit the Kirksville Community Christmas Dinner, a local nonprofit that provides a HUGE free dinner and festivities for around 500 people each year, including families who are most in need.  Anyone can attend; many of us do!

This year’s party is from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, December 16, at the Truman State Student Union Building.  Your donation and lots of volunteers help make this a true Christmas joy every year.  Check them out on Facebook.

Upcoming ECM Activities

  • 20 November: ECM Thanksgiving Dinner at Vicarage, at 5 pm. Please feel free to invite your friends. There is always room at the table.
  • 10 December: Winter Holiday Party at the Vicarage, 7 pm-????. Take a break from study on Reading Day Eve for goodies and fun.

Hat & Mitten Tree

Our annual “mitten tree” will go up next week on Christ the King Sunday, November 24.  All donated mittens, gloves, hats, and scarves will be taken to the Salvation Army on Wednesday, December 11.  Parents and caregivers will pick up gifts, including our hats, scarves, gloves, and mittens, for their families beginning December 16.  All shoppers, crocheters, loomers, and knitters are urged to contribute their stuff!

Stewardship Season is HereIt is a joy to give back to God just a bit of what God has so generously given us.  If you have not received your Stewardship package in the mail, please contact Amy or Krista.

We offer this prayer for stewardship discernment:

Abundant God, you made us in your image and breathed in us a spirit of generosity that is both gift and response. Move us, we pray, to give as we have received—abundantly, generously, and joyfully that our common ministry may ever bear witness to your unfailing grace. In the name of the Three in whom we are One.  Amen

Liturgical Notes—TU ES PETRUS – MAURICE DURUFLÉ (1902-1986)

Tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram aedificabo Ecclesiam meam.

You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church.       Matthew16:18a

This week’s choir anthem is Tu es Petrus, a rousing and optimistic work by French composer Maurice Duruflé. The church’s foundation on the rock of Peter is text-painted by the chaotic start that leads to a strong and sturdy final cadence. Despite lasting less than a minute, and being based on less than one verse of Matthew, this piece has been described as a “Great French Spiritual.”

Duruflé was a member of the modern French school. Although not very prolific, (he only published 14 pieces), Duruflé’s works was famous for his perfectionism, spending years editing pieces before they are published. Each was meticulously written, and all have a basis in Gregorian chant.  Tu es Petrus was part of a suite of four short pieces based on change. It was published in 1960, just as discussions about modern music were starting. In his view, the church should not embrace contemporary styles with guitars and drums, but rather re-imagine chant for a new area, by adapting ancient texts and chants to modern sensibilities. Needless to say, his view did not prevail

Save the Date! Amy’s Third Annual Advent Tea
