Bible Study on Isaiah—Adult Formation

Advent is coming. Starting on Tuesday November 5 at 6:30 pm we will have a 4 week bible study on the book of Isaiah, focusing on the 4 passages we will read on the Sundays of Advent.

A Book of Remembrance

In the Church’s liturgical calendar November 1st is All Saints Day (although we usually celebrate in on the following Sunday.) On this day, we remember all the saints who have been raised up by the Church as models of Christian life. November 2nd is All Souls Day, a time to remember our own beloved dead. Many Episcopal Churches use a Book of Remembrance in November. The Book contains a list of the names of parishioners’ deceased family and friends. The Book sits on the altar for the entire month, and in a mysterious fashion, those whom we have loved and lost are still part of our Sunday worship.

Trinity’s Book of Remembrance will be on the table in the new Meeting Room from October 27 to November 2. Feel free to write the names of any of your deceased loved ones in it. If you are not able to write names in it yourself, please e-mail or call Amy with your names and she will make sure they are included.

Stewardship Season is here.

Stewardship is the word the Church uses to refer to a thoughtful, prayerful consideration of what each individual or household can commit of time, talent, and money to support their local church. Some churches are able to fund their entire budget based on parishioners’ pledges of financial support. Others, like Trinity, look to their diocese to help make up the shortfall. But no matter what the state of their budget, parishioners’ financial support is a critical part of the life of the church.

This week you will receive your stewardship package in the mail. (If you do not receive one, please ask Amy or Krista, the Bishop’s Warden, for them.) Pledging to contribute a specific amount of money or increasing a pledge amount can be scary. We never know what the coming year might bring, and may be anxious if we can not fulfill our pledge. But making or increasing a pledge is meant to be a joyous, grateful spiritual practice. It is a joy to gve back to God just a bit of what God has so generously given us.

As you think about your financial commitment to Trinity, we offer this prayer to help in your discernment:

Abundant God, you made us in your image and breathed in us a spirit of generosity that is both gift and response. Move us, we pray, to give as we have received-abundantly, generously, and joyfully that our common ministry may ever bear witness to your unfailing grace. In the name of the Three in whom we are One.  Amen.

Liturgical Notes—Happy Allhallowtide?

You probably know the main church seasons, like Easter, Lent, Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany, but we are currently finishing Pentecost. It’s the “long green” season that started all the way back in May and ends in early December with the start of a new church year.

All Saints’ Day, November 1st, helps us remember those Saints, or “Hallows” who serve as good examples of a holy life. The next day, All Souls’ Day, helps us to remember our own beloved who have gone on before us. Even Halloween started as “Hallow’s Eve.” It’s pretty rare to hear anyone talk about the season of Allhallowtide anymore, but it’s still a good practice to stop for a moment to think about the Saints, our dear departed, and even our own eternal future.

As the end of a church year, we also use this time to think about the cycles in our own lives. Starting on December 1st, Advent is a season of hope and preparation for Christmas. The November season gives us a chance to think about our own mortality, those things that we have left unfinished, and what we should do to prepare for our coming rebirth, both in Advent/Christmas but also in eternity.
