As Lent approaches, the Church pauses for the joyful tradition of Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. The word “shrove” comes from an Old English term meaning “to confess,” reminding us that this day prepares our hearts for the reflective season ahead.

One of its longest-held customs is the pancake supper. In earlier times, households used up rich ingredients before the Lenten fast, and pancakes were the perfect way to do it. At Trinity, the supper has become a time of fellowship and hospitality-an evening to gather, laugh, and share a meal as a parish family.

Shrove Tuesday invites us to balance joy with preparation. As we enjoy the feast, we also ready ourselves for Lent’s call to prayer, giving, and renewal. It is a moment to lay aside what distracts us and open our hearts to God’s grace.
